The AIPAD Photography Show - New York

AIPAD Photography Show March 26th in New York. More than 70 of the world's leading fine art photography galleries will present a wide range of museum quality work by contemporary, modern and 19th century masters at the Park Avenue Armory in New York City. The 29th edition of The AIPAD Photography Show New York will open with a Gala Preview on March 25th to benefit the John Szarkowski Fund of The Museum of Modern Art. The AIPAD Photography Show New York is the longest running and most respected photography art fair.

Gala Benefit Preview
The AIPAD Photography Show New York will present a Gala Benefit Preview on Wednesday, March 25th, from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. The evening will benefit the John Szarkowski Fund, an endowment for photography acquisitions at The Museum of Modern Art in New York City. The fund was established to honor John Szarkowski, one of the most influential curators in photography and a photographer in his own right.

Featured Special Exhibitions

Innovation
To celebrate the 30th anniversary of AIPAD, The AIPAD Photography Show New York will present a thematic "exhibition within an exhibition." From daguerreotype to new media, each gallery will highlight a work that reflects an innovation - such as a technical or artistic development or a seminal work - in the history of photography. A complete catalogue of the Innovation special exhibition, including images and wall text, will be available at http://www.aipad.com.


Cause & Effect
The Center for the Legacy of Photography, a new initiative of George Eastman House and the Image Permanence Institute at Rochester Institute of Technology, will present a special exhibition that includes vintage photographic prints drawn from George Eastman House's extensive collection. The exhibition will provide insight into historic cause-and-effect relationships of materials and processes.

Show Information
The AIPAD Photography Show New York will run from Thursday, April 10 through Sunday, April 13, 2008, at the Park Avenue Armory at 67th Street in New York City.

Show hours will be:

Saturday, March 26, 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

This month, the Terra Galleria in Santa Monica is presenting Scenes of Wonder & Curiosity, a retrospective exhibit of well-known author, educator and photographer Ted Orland. The exhibit showcases his evolving artistic vision, from tonally perfect black and white prints in the tradition of Ansel Adams, to hand-colored works and digital collages with a uniquely Orlandian twist. Taken together, his collection of images reveals the "incongruities of an uncertain world" and serves as a gentle satire of our modern condition, highlighting the unexpected intrusion of the artificial upon the natural, the secular upon the sacred.

An artist reception will be held on Saturday, January 10, 2009, from 5 to 9pm at the gallery. Several other Bergamont Station art galleries are also having receptions on the same evening.

Exquisite, whimsical, quirky, spontaneous, insightful, his photography is all of the above. And more. Accidental light leaks become part of the composition; an obtrusive trash-can mimics a magnificent landscape; bold colors float on a black and white background. There is a distinctive impromptu characteristic that makes Ted Orland's photography look almost casual, yet he takes his work seriously enough to have written two books about the nature of the artmaking process. Like his writings, his photographs are rich in dialog, with titles often as interesting as the subjects.

Ted Orland lives in Santa Cruz, where he pursues parallel careers in teaching, writing and photography. His photographic career began in the 1970s, when he worked as Ansel Adams assistant and instructor at Adams' Annual Summer Yosemite Workshops. He later held academic positions at Stanford University and at the University of Oregon; currently he teaches Digital Photography at Cabrillo College, and leads photography workshops across the country. Ted is co-author (with David Bayles) of the classic artists' survival guide, Art & Fear, and author of its recent companion volume, The View From The Studio Door. A large selection of Ted's early photographs and writings appear in his monograph, Scenes of Wonder & Curiosity, and his artworks have been widely exhibited and are included in over thirty museum collections.
