John Chervinsky - Experiment in Perspective

John Chervinsky has been passionately pursuing photography for 20 years. Chervinsky’s background in physics, chemistry, and materials science is evident in his series of conceptual still-lifes. Inspired by predecessors such as John Pfahl, he set out to explore issues of visual perception and photography in his ongoing series, “An Experiment in Perspective.

Statement by artist: My still lifes are intended to be presented in the manner of a science demonstration or imaginary physics experiment. Chalk marking on blackboards are justaposed with real objects to create tensions between the physical world and the imaginary constructs that we use to define it. To accomplish the illusory effect of the chalk, I point a view camera towards the horizon point of two right-angle chalkboards. Markings are drawn into the three-dimentional field (in forced perspective) such that, from the fixed point of view of the camera, they appear to have depth, or to be floating in space, or on the surface plane of the photograph.

In an effort to engage collaboration with the viewer, the images are conceived symbolically, to form an open-ended framework. While it is my intent that the chalk markings and blackboards place the work into the world of ideas, it is not intended to be instructional. Rather, I see the work as posing questions without easy answers. My intent is not to express a single, narrow perspective, but to among other things, expose the fallacy of doing so.

You can read the artists full statement by visiting
John Chervinsky's website.

A selection of Chervinsky's photography will be on display until July 19th at the Clark Gallery, located in Lincoln, MA. He was also recently featured in a recent exhibition at the Benham Gallery in Seattle.

For information about purchasing prints please contact
the Clark Gallery or the Benham Gallery.

Luhring Augustine
Gregory Crewdson Exhibition

Luhring Augustine in New York, is featuring an exhibition of new large-scale photographs by Gregory Crewdson. In this latest body of work, made over the past three years, the artist continues his exploration of the fertile edges of the American vernacular - now with less of a focus on character and drama and a greater emphasis on atmosphere and setting. The work will be on display until May 3rd.

Here, Crewdson steps back from the themes of confrontation
and psychological turmoil that marked much of his earlier work to create a more subdued take on his trademark terrain of small-town disquiet. His careful orchestration of light in both interior and exterior scenes serves to draw the viewer into the images, deepening the sense of displacement and solitude. The windows, doorways and mirrors in these settings act as framing devices, creating a layer of separation; inviting, yet ultimately inaccessible. The exterior images, which predominate here, present small figures adrift in still and silent vistas, while the interiors depict people in moments of deep reflection. Throughout these scenes, Crewdson's subjects are captured at points of liminal anticipation - perched between the "before" and "after"- drawing upon a notion of voyeurism.

Gregory Crewdson is an internationally exhibited artist whose photographs are included in numerous museums and public collections around the world. From 2005 to 2008 a retrospective of his work traveled to museums across Europe, including the Kunstverein Hannover, Germany, the Fotomuseum Winterthur, Switzerland, and the Hasselblad Center, Sweden. He is on the faculty of the Department of Photography at Yale University and lives in New York City.

The son of exiled Chinese nationalists, Tseng Kwong Chi was part of an intimate circle of artists, Keith Haring, Kenny Scharf, and Cindy Sherman among them, who took the center stage of the New York art world during the nineteen-eighties. As a Hong-Kong born, Paris-trained artist, Tseng viewed himself as a citizen of the world and eschewed labeling himself or his art as "Chinese.” However, his ironic self-portraits posed in a Mao suit in front of American landmarks found their way to Communist China and were profoundly influential for China’s avant-garde, including conceptual artists Song Dong and Zhang Huan, who were exposed to Tseng’s images through western magazines smuggled into the country in the 1980’s. Tseng’s photographs not only satirized relations between the United States and its emerging rival, China, but also broadcasted his freedom of movement - a privilege denied most Chinese artists at the time.

The work of Tseng Kwong Chi is in numerous public collections, including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Walker Museum of Art, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Tseng’s photographs were shown publicly in China for the first time at the 2004 Shanghai Biennale..

Denver - SPE 2008 National Conference

The Society of Photographic Educators is having their National Conference in Denver, March 13th - 16th. The conference will take place at the Adam's Mark Hotel, in the heart of downtown Denver. This is the 45th annual conference and it's billed as "Agents of Change: Art and Advocacy."

Here's a statement from the Conference Chair.

The work of a photographic artist took center stage during the 108th United States Congress. On the agenda was the fate of drilling for oil in Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR). According to Secretary Gale Norton ANWR was “a flat white nothingness.” In response, Senator Barbara Boxer denounced drilling and held up a book of photographs by Subhanker Banerjee that showed the refuge brimming with life. Congress voted to save ANWR from drilling for two more years.

Lens-based artists have been catalysts for change with imagery that advocates social and environmental awareness. Artists bear witness, interpret, expose and address problems ranging from the Aids epidemic and stereotypes in race and gender to the plight of refugees in war torn countries. In what ways are artists responding to the local and global challenges that are reshaping politics, cultures, economies and the planet? As educators, artists and scholars, what has been the historical impact of our advocacy? What role will we play in shaping the future?

Denver and the Rocky Mountain West have long been home to diverse and often opposing political, social, economic and environmental interests. With fortunes historically linked to extractive industries like mining, natural gas, and oil, Denver is also a leader in urban planning and energy conservation. The Mile High City has been invigorated by major new projects in the arts. The Denver Art Museum has opened its new Hamilton Building, designed by architect Daniel Libeskind. The Denver Museum of Contemporary Art has broken ground for a new 27,000 square foot environmentally-efficient building. Denver is a dynamic and growing modern city that enjoys 300 days of sunshine a year and the magnificent Rocky Mountains in the backyard.

Joann Brennan
Conference Chair

Admission is expensive, not free. Please check the SPE Conference website for information about attending this event.

Month of Photography

In addition to hosting the SPE conference this year, Denver is home to the Month of Photography celebration in March. Check the blog at http://303photo.blogspot.com for show listings, maps, events, calls for entry and more. Plan out your art fun while visiting the Mile High City and see what Denver has to offer!

It looks like the Denver art community is supporting this event by providing lots of interesting exhibitions. The blog mentioned above lists photography exhibitions.

Ray Charles White Exhibition
Senior & Shopmaker Gallery in New York

Senior & Shopmaker Gallery, in New York, is presenting an exhibition of new photographic works by photographer Ray Charles White. The artist, was born in Toronto in 1961. He employs “straight photography” skills which he honed under the tutelage of Ansel Adams, in combination with computer-based digital technology and screenprinting techniques. The resulting images—water surfaces, tree branches, shards of cracked ice—are silkscreened onto anodized aluminum panels producing an effect at once simple and infinitely detailed.

Shooting directly from nature, White captures the tension, tranquility, and emotional potential of water, in all its forms. Like artists such as Vija Celmins, Roni Horn, and Hiroshi Sugimoto, White is fascinated by the potential for pure abstraction inherent in patterns found in water surfaces. By tightly cropping his images and arranging them in minimalist grids, the artist eliminates references to specific landscapes.

White has exhibited throughout the United States and Canada in solo and group exhibitions, and most recently at Albemarle Gallery in London. His work is included in the collections of the Norton Museum of Art, West Palm Beach, FL; the Musee d’art Contemporain, Lausanne, Switzerland, the U.S. Embassy in Ottawa, Canada, and the Progressive Collection, Cleveland, OH. He currently resides in New York.
